History

Intent

Our children will be given opportunities to make links across the curriculum which will be carefully planned to enable them to embed their learning using local context wherever possible. Feedback is undertaken wherever possible with the children present and assessment is proportionate and effective to look at the next steps of learning. We want our children to enjoy learning, to be confident and persistent. In our History curriculum the children will be encouraged to act as historians: developing their knowledge of key historical time periods and events, researching key figures and events, using primary and secondary sources, and develop an understanding of the impact those people and events had and continue to have. In an ever changing world children need to understand how History has shaped our world and how it continues to shape their future.

Implementation

Planning is, wherever possible, cross-curricular, with skills and knowledge linked to and enriched by other subjects and operates on a 2 year rolling programme.

Assessment is ongoing and key skills are highlighted on a termly basis or at the end of a unit.

 Wherever possible Historical learning is chronological.

 We, as teachers, provide a fun and informative way to learn about the world around us both now and in the past.

 Planning accommodates the mixed year groups and is differentiated therein.

 Visits are planned and visitors are invited into school to enhance learning.

 Opportunities for longer pieces of writing are planned as a link with English.

 In all classes, there are children of differing ability. We recognise this fact and provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. Continuous assessment will provide next steps for all children.

Impact

 Children and teachers will enjoy the learning process and develop skills and knowledge which lead to greater understanding of the world.

 Children will be resilient investigators who are prepared to evaluate and improve their work.

 Children learn to ask relevant questions.

 Outcomes for all year groups will show consistent good teaching and learning evidenced through books and pupil voice
