Geography Intent Statement Intent
At St Augustine’s Catholic Primary, we follow the core knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum; we believe that this provides the basis of the pupils’ Geography education. We intend, through our cross- curricular approach, to build upon, develop and deepen the children’s core knowledge and understanding of the world and its people, while providing opportunities for them to question and make links with their learning through geographic thought. Our aim is to inspire and foster a curiosity and fascination with our world and to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. The Geography Curriculum at St Augustine’s, is based upon the 2014 Primary National Curriculum, which provides a broad framework and outlines the knowledge and skills taught in each Key Stage. As the children are taught within class groups, which are mixed ages and abilities, we follow a 2-year cycle of topics. Each term, the children have a major focus (e.g. Tudor Exploration) where their learning is linked across the curriculum. We take part in purposeful, interesting and exciting experiences to enrich their learning. It is important that children develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject and linking their learning to other curriculum areas. In all classes, there are children of differing ability. We recognise this fact and provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. Continuous assessment will provide next steps for all children. Impact All children will access a rich, ambitious, challenging curriculum; one that is broad, balanced and relevant, fostering curiosity, creativity and a life-long love of learning. It will prepare them well for each stage of education, employment or training and enable them, as educated citizens, to contribute to creating a better world.
Impact
The impact will be measured through:
• Pupil voice
•Book moderation
•Drop-ins
• Assessments
• Engagement and enjoyment
• Teaching and learning
• Planning
• SIP
•Moderation
•Short/medium and Long term plans

For Geography as part of " our local area" topic, we were lucky to welcome a special guest- Elaine Gill who is a local artist. She talked to us about her maps and how she sketches, draws and paints them. It was interesting to learn about her art work which can be seen in Maidstone, (she drew the Elmer map) and in the Victoria Place
