PSHE

PSHE lead: Katrina Liddle

PSHE Intent:

At St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education complement several National Curriculum subjects. We look for opportunities to draw links between the subjects and integrate teaching where appropriate. We want our children to enjoy learning; to be confident and independent, to build resilience and persistence, Children should be confident to be able to transfer skills from one area of learning to another.

Catholic Social Teaching.

Our children are encouraged to explore human dignity and celebrate the diverse world we live in. We focus on people’s strengths, celebrate differences, and understand that everyone has the right to live the life they choose as long as they are not hurting others. They also have the opportunity to explore how they can make positive lifestyle choices and recognise their gifts are God given.

Children explore their own feelings, as well as the feelings of those around them. Our children gain the skills to manage their emotions positively and to understand how and where to seek help if needed.

We encourage stewardship by supporting our children’s understanding of the world around them, and introduces them  the needs of humans and other living things as they grow, including how adults contribute to the working world. They will also learn how they can look after Gods’ world and reduce their carbon footprint.

Implementation

P.S.H.E. will be delivered to address the following statutory(relationships and health) objectives by the end of primary school: Mental wellbeing, online safety and harms, Physical health and fitness. Healthy eating, Drugs, alcohol and tobacco, Health and prevention, Basic first aid, Being safe, Online relationships, Caring friendships, Respective relationships, changing adolescent body (9years onwards), families and people who care for me.

PSHE will further support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and patterns of behaviour, which enable pupils to;

•to inspire everyone

•enrich their life now and in the future

•Form relationships

•Explore learning.

•Communicate effectively

•to work both as part of a team and as an individual

•Respond to challenge

•to articulate and share ideas

•Be active citizens within the local community

•Explore issues related to living in a democratic society

Impact

Our Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and with close links to the community.  In doing so children learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

We want our children to enjoy learning; to be, confident and independent to build resilience and persistence, to be able to transfer skills from one area of learning to another, to work both as part of a team and as an individual, to articulate and share ideas, thoughts and feelings which enable excellent well being and good mental and physical health, to be creative in whatever way they can, in and out of the classroom, and to be intellectually challenged and fulfilled.

Our relationship and sex education is based on our children understanding the importance of marriage and family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care.  Our implementation of RSE will ensure sufficient attention is paid to developing the self-esteem of children in order that they can make informed choices in the future.  The children will also be provided with sufficient factual knowledge related to their age. Although RSE is taught through different aspects of the curriculum it will be rooted in the RE, PSHE and the Ten Ten RSE scheme Life to the full.

This week, St Francis Class has been embracing the spirit of their class saint by learning how to care for the world around them. Inspired by St Francis’ love for nature, the children have been busy helping to look after the birds and tending to our school garden.

School Council Meet to Discuss New Playground Equipment Our School Council gathered this week for an exciting discussion about the plans for new playground equipment. The children explored a detailed model layout and shared thoughtful ideas about how the space could be designed to support play, teamwork, and well-being. It was wonderful to see such enthusiastic participation, with pupils carefully considering what would make the new area inclusive and enjoyable for everyone

Road Safety Officers Supporting Our Pupils Our Road Safety officers have been doing a fantastic job helping children cross the road safely to and from the swimming pool. Each week, they put on their high‐visibility jackets and position themselves at key points, ensuring that all pupils can navigate busy roads with confidence.
