St Augustine’s School Governors – Who they are and what they do?
Every school has a Governing Body, whose main purpose is to improve standards.  To do this the Governor Body sets the strategic framework for the school in partnership with the Headteacher. This includes setting the policies and targets to achieve the objectives and monitoring the progress of the school.
The Governing Body works with the Headteacher, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school, including the management of the staff.
Our role as Governors is to support St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, being prepared to account for the school’s overall performance. We also act as ‘critical friends’, which means offering support, constructive advice, a sounding board for ideas, a second opinion on proposals and help where needed.
The Foundation Governors, who are appointed by the Catholic Diocese of Southwark, have a duty to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the school.
Governors are volunteers who work, in partnership with their School Headteacher, to ensure that children receive the best education possible. Governors represent the largest volunteer group in the UK and are selected from a variety of backgrounds to reflect the many interest groups within our schools.
Our Governing Body is constituted of 18 governors. Membership comprises of representatives of the local Parishes (Foundation Governors), parents, staff and the Local Authority.
